4 Things I learned While Interviewing Erika Jayne (RHOBH)

4 Things I learned While Interviewing Erika Jayne (RHOBH)

1. Do whatever the fuck you want.

I’m sitting on the floor of my two-bedroom in the North Side, notes and pens and a cat sprawled out on the coffee table in front of me. Erika is sitting in her library, equip with a vast selection of literature, art, and no less than two fireplaces.  I'm nervous, and have just spent all night watching RHOBH re-runs to get a handle on who I was about to talk to, thinking she was going to be some bubbly-bimbo, and that I was some wanna-be interviewer.  But, in the 45-minutes and two phone calls that ensued, I ended up learning a thing or two.

1. Do whatever the fuck you want.

"Who cares what they say, do what makes you happy." she declares, explaining that at 35 married a 76-year-old, started performing again, and finally began living the life she wanted.

She quickly claimed her first number one hit on Billboard’s Dance Club List, followed by seven more over the next eight years. She topped the Hit List with Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Shakira, but not before starting her own record label, Pretty Mess Records.

2. Stop Girl on Girl Crime

Erika expresses that it’s her humble beginnings as a struggling entertainer, working as a cocktail waitress, that will help the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills audience relate to her. “I remember my roots, to be kind and, sometimes, to give people the benefit of the doubt.”  Referring to the ladies on the show, she says "we're all in this together, let's not tear each other down."

3. Befriend an interior Designer.

As my interview was regarding her home, which was architected by Myron Hunt, she spoke extensively about its original mahogany structures, dramatic staircase, several fireplaces, and a chapel. Yep, a fucking chapel. With the help of interior decorator to the stars Joan Behnke, the estate has a feeling of old Hollywood glamour, making it seem like “Gene Harlow could descend down the staircase at any moment.”

4. Cell carriers are all the same

The call was going great, and I think I actually just said something funny; did she just laugh? I'm on a roll and just as I was about to move on, the call drops. "Oh my god," I thought, "I just hung up on her. I'm the peasant that hung up on Erika Jayne."

A minute later, her publicist calls me back, hands the phone over, and Erika explains that while the home is “over the top glamour,” the cell reception isn’t great.

PREACH, SISTER.
